Increasing carer diversity and inclusion

10% of the population in Swansea are from a Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic (BAME) background; many of whom will be carers. The BAME carers face additional difficulties as they care – struggling with language barriers, accessing culturally appropriate services and with stereotyping around caring. This puts them at greater risk of ill health, poverty, loss of employment and social exclusion.

The BAME project at Swansea Carers Centre will work together with local BAME organisations to identify BAME carers and encourage them to feed into developing our new carer support service.

The project will:

• hold Zoom (or face to face if safe to do so) monthly consultation sessions with carers from different community groups
• offer 1-1 carer well-being support and peer support group sessions
• aim to increase household income by providing welfare benefit information advice
• help complete forms and offer advice
• recruit BAME volunteers to support this project
• provide training and activities
